Swades

Swades a movie i was told , every indian in the US should relate to.. hmm ... I guess that would be a fair comment though not for me. I generally do not like seeing hindi movies. However, since the last venture of this Director impressed me a lot, i figured, what the heck.. lets give this one a shot too, even though it has gayrukh ... oops .. i mean Shahrukh Khan in it. Well i found the movie to be ..umm lets see...about 30 on a scale of 100. I was satisfied that Mr. Khan did not reprise his role as a melodramatic actor sobbing away in a complex love triangle. The movie has some nice songs, my fav being "yuhin chala chal......". Though it seemed only like a "movie" to me and nothing else ... since i have people here to whom it seemed a lot more than a movie. I read in the papers sometime ago that this was indeed a true story about some engineers from Kerala. Though touching it may be, i was not impressed by it. Certain moments though are touching in the movie, like when the villager is explaining to Mohan, why he cant pay the rent. Thats about the only touching aspect of the film. Besides it, it continues to be a lesson in Moral Science. Ashutosh Gowarikar has continued with almost half his Lagaan caste. The new actress in Gayatri Joshi is hot. The story is good, though the movie is ok ok... i would say a one time watch. IT tends to drag at some points too. Also it has a lot of mistakes in it as well. I will let the the true "movie buffs" figure that out, though some are blatantly evident. The editing sucks big time. If this movie wins awards, it should for just the music. If it does for anything else, it will just show the poor taste of the voting judges. As far as i am concerned, i AM an INDIAN in the US, and the only way I think I relate to Mohan Bhargava, is that I have the same number of A's , V's and H's in my full name too ....

Cheers

Dude, thanks for reading my review. Yea there are many small minor mistakes in the movie, like the sneakers issue etc. However, the most glaring mistake i think is the fact that he is working as a research scientist at NASA without a US citizenship. I mean when was the last time that happened ?.... NEVER.... and i doubt if it will happen. Unless i missed a key part in the beginneing, i know he was about to get a phone call regarding his citizenship. In anycase, unless you are a US citizen, i dont think you can get a job at NASA at his post. I know. I have tried, but due to citizenship issues, i have been rejected. Cmon, if you see the movie again, you will see the pointlessness in it ...

PS : Sorry for the late reply. I was busy over the weekend with start of school and some partying and lukkhagiri

Cheers

There are some jobs that NASA gives for which they don't require citizenship. But they are very low level. You have to have citizenship for any kind of development. Even the companies who get contracts from the government, even they won't hire non-citizens for crying out loud. Anyways most digital signal processing stuff is funded by the governmnet anyways.

In Swades he has an RV but where does he have a hook up for water, getting rid of the waste and all that stuff. I guess they didn't really know how to fit an RV park in the movie. I can go on about the movie but I think it was too dumb for me to waste my time to rant about it.

NASA hires permanent residents for its job posts. Since gayrukh was in US for 12 years, we cans afely assume he was a permanent resident.

ya ture, but then in the start of the movie it says that his citizenship application just passed. So i guess, NASA hired him when he "Applied" for citizenship ... which is wrong :P ...

Here is some interesting trivia for you. Shah Rukh Khan is a NASA employee and later he is manning a bookstore for a friend. The bookstore is called "PathFinder". For all those who are familiar with software Model Checking know that there is a NASA product called the Java PathFinder. So this got me thinking on whether the mention of PathFinder was a coincidence or whether they knew it was a NASA product. The thing is they make it a point to show the name of the shop that what makes me think it is more than a conincidence.

software modelling....seems CS stuff to me .. though when i had seen the name ... i was looking at it not as NASA's software modelling program, but the fact the book store was in a bungalow :P .. well could be .. in fact in mumbai there are a few that "look" like a bungalow. Secondly as you said ... the first thing that came to my mind was not the java thing .. but the fact that they were trying to get the Mars Pathfinder thingy into the picture, cause i had read in one of the articles on rediff, just before the movie, that stated that a part of the movie was shot in a place that was indeed used to test or launch the pathfinder or something ... whatever it may be, it seems like a corny name to me :P ..

hmm you are right. I guess I didn't think of that. "seems CS stuff", by the ever so slight touch of disdain while refering to something CSy, makes me think you are either CE or EE ;)

Well I am doing my MS in Formal Verification. I do research in structural heuristics for explicit state model checkers. Actually I work with an embedded software model checker. So I do a lot of low level stuff too. I find good papers relating to my research and then used to forget where I saved them. Thats when I started blogging the papers. Helps me with easy access to them. I do almost everything in C++ and C. The EE classes I took made me :S All the VHDL stuff, I wanted to drop dead and die. I would rather starve and die than do anything EEish.

BTW we are related to some jhunjhunwalas in b'bay, wonder if you know them. Actually my grandmom's family. SHe has like 5 brothers
